THE NAROWAL PROJECT (Since February 2004)

  • June 29 , 2015

Narowal is located towards northeast of the province of Punjab at a distance of 125 km from Lahore, Pakistan. It has a population of approximately 1.4 million, who had no access to mental health services in their area. In case of a relative having a psychiatric disorder they had to travel long distances for mental health services.

In 2002, Mr. Abrar-ul-Haq, the famous singer constructed the Sughra Shafi Medical College in this area which is a 250 bedded hospital to make available the provision of health services to the people of the area. In 2004, he approached Prof. Sa’ad Malik regarding help for the provision of mental health services. Consequently, since February 2004 these services are being provided there by the team of MIND.

Since 2004, MIND has been running a charity clinic for the psychiatric patients at the Sughra Shafi Medical Complex, Narowal. A team of psychiatrists, coordinator and volunteers visits Narowal on every alternate Thursday.

The poor and deprived patients of this remote area are provided with the following services at our clinic:

Needs and Plans

As the number of patients has increased over time, more funds are needed for the provision of services. Moreover, there is also a need for clinical psychologists so that psychological interventions can be made available to the patients.
